Where to Celebrate 2024 New Year’s Eve in Taipei

Depending on the type of mood you are looking for, there are tons of places to choose from. I recommend checking out the following spots where each location has its unique charm and offerings for a memorable celebration.

1. Taipei 101

Every year Taipei 101 has firework concert.

You must hear it by now the iconic Taipei 101, with its towering presence, will host the biggest fireworks show in Taiwan yearly. This event is all about grand colors, featuring a breathtaking fireworks display that lights up the night sky. The fireworks show will last around 360 seconds, featuring interesting light shows straight from the tower itself.

If you watched it last year, no need to worry as it will have different fireworks every year. When the countdown starts, everyone will be in sync counting the numbers together until it reaches 0. It is a big celebration even being aired live(if you wanna watch it at home, it is also an option). Be sure to get there early to secure a good spot and join the crowd in the new year countdown experience.

2. Tamsui

The beautiful fireworks show at Tamsui.

Tamsui is a cool district to celebrate the coming of 2024. Not a lot of folks know this but there’s also another firework show in this beautiful harbour. It is located along the northern coast of Taipei and the fireworks will be held from 8 pm (20:24 to be exact).

The best thing is that it will be 13 minutes and 14 seconds long, hence the name of the event is “Tamsui 1314 New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show”. To give you a reference, the Taipei 101 fireworks would only last 360 seconds!

Not only that, last year it was considered the longest-distance New Year’s fireworks in Taiwan, with a fireworks firing line stretching one kilometer. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do this year better than the last. Even after finished watching these fireworks, you still have time to welcome 2024 by watching another one in Taipei 101 or other places you want.

3. Banqiao Christmasland

banqiao christmasland 2023
One of the most anticipated Christmas celebrations! (note the huge crowds).

Last year I had the chance to visit this amazing Christmas event in Banqiao (New Taipei). It is one of the biggest events in Taipei, you don’t wanna miss it as it will only be open for a month, from November 17, 2023, until January 01, 2024.

This year’s theme is going to be “Santa Bear”(last year was “Disney Frozen”). When you do visit, you will be welcomed with various Christmas decorations from tall Christmas trees to neon lights accompanying the walkway.

Because of how popular it is, I made a specific guide for you to know everything before going to this year’s Banqiao Christmasland 2023!

4. Xinyi District

The cool Xinyi District has many xmas decors.

Xinyi district is a popular district for anyone looking to experience the New Year vibe. Just adjacent to Taipei 101, the Xinyi District is decorated with many festive celebrations on New Year’s Eve. The streets are lined with glittery lights, street music performances, and even amazing New Year’s activities.

It’s a lively environment, with street vendors offering delectable local snacks, and various cultural performances taking place. You can stroll through the energetic crowd, engage in the merriment, and soak in the vibrant ambiance. With an array of dining options and street food stalls, you can savor Taiwanese delicacies while waiting for the clock to strike midnight.

Where Can I Watch the Fireworks in Taipei?

Taipei 101 fireworks are considered Taiwan’s most iconic celebrations. To catch the fireworks up close, you can head to the Xinyi District early to secure a prime viewing spot. This area gets crowded early with people gathering to witness the show, I recommend coming earlier to secure some empty spots.

However, if you prefer a more relaxed setting, there are alternative spots to consider. Elephant Mountain is a popular choice, as it offers a panoramic view of the city. The Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf is another option, providing a serene and distant perspective of the fireworks that shimmer over the Taipei skyline.

1. Taipei 101: The most iconic spot to watch the fireworks is, of course, at Taipei 101 itself. Many people will arrive early to Xinyi district to save a seat before the place gets crowded. The Taipei 101 Fireworks Show is a world-renowned spectacle that attracts thousands of visitors every year. The view from the adjacent Xinyi District is also fantastic. If you plan to watch from here, arrive early, as this area gets crowded quickly.

2. Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan): For a more panoramic view, hike up Elephant Mountain. The trek is moderately challenging, but the reward is a breathtaking vista of Taipei, with Taipei 101 front and center. It’s a popular choice among both locals and tourists, so expect company as you wait for the clock to strike midnight.

3. Tamsui: If you prefer a more tranquil setting, head to Danshui. This coastal town in New Taipei City offers a peaceful view of the Taipei skyline across the river. Enjoy the fireworks from the riverside promenade, where you can also explore the local night market.

4. Linsen Park: Located in the Zhongshan District, Linsen Park offers a unique experience. Enjoy the fireworks with a backdrop of the park’s serene lake. It’s a quieter spot compared to the hustle and bustle of Taipei 101 and Xinyi, making it ideal for a more relaxed New Year’s Eve celebration.

5. Maokong Gondola: For a different perspective, consider taking a gondola ride to Maokong. This elevated area provides a distant but captivating view of the Taipei skyline. Plus, you can enjoy the charm of Maokong’s teahouses and scenic views.

6. Rooftop Bars: Several rooftop bars around Taipei offer exclusive views of the fireworks. While these venues usually require reservations and have a cover charge, they provide a luxurious way to welcome the new year with a cocktail in hand and a stunning cityscape before you.

Enjoy a memorable dinner in front of Taipei 101.

Taipei’s culinary scene is nothing short of extraordinary, and New Year’s Eve is the perfect occasion to savor its diverse offerings. Local restaurants, ranging from hole-in-the-wall eateries to fine dining establishments, go all out to create special menus for this festive evening. It’s an opportunity to explore the flavors of Taiwan, from street food delights to gourmet experiences.

You can opt for an intimate dinner with loved ones at a cozy spot in one of Taipei’s charming neighborhoods. This might involve sampling iconic dishes like xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) or savoring the rich, hearty flavors of beef noodle soup, a Taiwanese staple. Alternatively, you can explore the city’s international culinary scene and indulge in a global gastronomic journey.

But Taipei isn’t just about food; it’s about the experience. Many restaurants offer panoramic views of the city, making your New Year’s Eve meal a visual feast as well. And when the clock strikes midnight, the night sky lights up with fireworks, adding a touch of magic to your dining experience.

2. Go for Riverside Walks in Tamsui

I loved walking along the pier of Tamsui to see sunsets.

Tamsui, a historic district on the outskirts of Taipei, offers a unique way to welcome the new year. The district is known for its serene riverside setting, making it a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. On New Year’s Eve, Tamsui’s riverside promenade comes alive with the twinkling lights of street vendors and the laughter of locals and visitors.

People gather here to enjoy a leisurely walk along the Tamsui River, basking in the calm atmosphere and the stunning views. As the year turns, you can watch distant fireworks displays in the city. It’s a tradition for people to release colorful lanterns into the night sky, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes Tamsui a charming spot to start the new year.

3. Immerse Yourself in Taipei’s Concert

Join the New Year’s concert countdown.

During the concert, you’ll be treated to a diverse range of music genres, from pop and rock to electronic beats and classical melodies. Be sure to check the lineup to see which artists will be performing, and get ready to dance, sing, and celebrate along with the crowd. Capture the moments with your phone or camera and share your experience on social media with fellow concert-goers.

One of the highlights of New Year’s Eve concerts in Taipei is the collective countdown to midnight. As the clock strikes 12, the crowd erupts with cheers and joy, creating an electric atmosphere. It’s an unforgettable moment to cherish. After the concert, continue your celebrations by exploring Taipei’s nightlife, trying out local delicacies, or simply enjoying the company of friends. Remember to stay safe, keep an eye on your belongings, and drink responsibly. This New Year’s Eve concert is not just about the music; it’s about creating memories and welcoming 2024 in style.

Many night clubs will have New Year’s Eve activities.

For dance enthusiasts, Taipei’s nightclubs are the ultimate destination on New Year’s Eve. These venues are known for their world-class DJs, dazzling light shows, and impressive sound systems. The city’s nightclubs offer an electrifying clubbing experience that is hard to match.

The Xinyi District, in particular, is home to some of Taipei’s hottest clubs, and they draw both locals and international partygoers. The vibe is infectious, and the music is a pulse-pounding mix of beats. It’s a night where you can let loose and dance until the early hours of the morning, celebrating the arrival of the new year with a community of like-minded party enthusiasts.

5. Go for a River Cruise

At Tamsui you can cruise the night away.

If you’re looking for a unique way to experience New Year’s Eve in Taipei, consider booking a river cruise. Several companies offer special packages for this memorable occasion. You can embark on a cruise along the Tamsui River or the Keelung Harbor, where you’ll be treated to a night of relaxation and enchantment.

These cruises often feature live music, dance floors, and an onboard dinner. The gentle sway of the boat on the water adds a tranquil touch to the festivities. As the clock nears midnight, you’ll have an unparalleled vantage point to watch the Taipei 101 fireworks display.
